Goal 5: Improve maternal health

We agreed to:

  • Reduce by three quarters the maternal mortality ratio.

News: the female condom is on the up. Using condoms is one way to prevent pregnancy and the spread of sexually transmitted diseases, but until recently wearing one’s been a man’s job.
Now increasingly women can take it on themselves.

Sri Lankan prostitutes are actually charging their customers more for the ‘added pleasure’.
In Senegal, the condoms are sold with beads that users wear around their waists. The sound of the beads tinkling and the condom rustling gets people salivating…safely.

What does this have to do with maternal mortality?
Having more choice in how and when to get pregnant means fewer women die in childbirth.
