Goal 4: Reduce child mortality

We agreed to:

  • Reduce by two thirds the mortality rate among children under five.

If you’re born in a rich country, there’s one chance in 143 you won’t make it to five. If you’re born in a poor country, your odds change to one in 10.

This can change for the better.

Bangladesh cut the number of deaths for under-fives by 25% between 1990 and 1998. How?
By focusing on immunization; by running campaigns on how to treat diarrhoea and other diseases; by improving sanitation and access to safe water and by strengthening girls’ and women’s access to education and income.
